Milestones are perfect moments for reflection. As I mark one year for this site—and some major steps forward in my journey to becoming a published author—I’m thrilled to hint at some early news. While I can’t share all the details yet, things are in motion for my debut novel to be published. I’m beyond excited to finally see something I wrote come to life as an actual book.
Yet, alongside that excitement, there’s a part of me biting my nails, and it’s not for a good reason. Although I’ve lived abroad for a long time, I’m still deeply connected to the U.S. As an American citizen, I feel the weight of every election, but this time feels like a true crossroads for the country—and one that will affect much more than just the U.S.
When Trump was first elected, I was disappointed but not exactly shocked. Growing up, I saw many of the views we now see on full display from the MAGA world. But since then, Trump, as a figurehead, has amplified a fearful, divisive mindset, using it for his own ends. This has become increasingly dangerous, not just for America but for everyone.
So, here I am, wrestling with the question of how to respond. I’ve already voted, and I’m left to wait, wondering if I could be doing more. If I should be doing more, or as a middle-aged, middle-class white straight male, is it best that I keep my mouth shut because my demographic has had the say long enough?
Reflecting on my role as a writer, I realize I have an opportunity to make something positive out of this moment. Writing allows me to foster empathy and understanding—a perspective I find especially crucial now. I believe public voices, whether through books, art, or other forms, hold a responsibility to encourage compassion and connection.
Through my characters and stories, I aim to invite readers on journeys that deepen their understanding of people and perspectives beyond their own. My hope is that these worlds will open minds and foster greater empathy. I find this process works the same way for me from the ‘creator’ side. This isn’t just a primary goal for me—it feels like a responsibility, especially as the next days unfold, and as I prepare to share my voice and work with everyone.
Finally, a personal note. As an immigrant, I left my birthplace in pursuit of a better life as I define “better.” My life here in Germany and as a part of the EU reflects principles I value, and I’m grateful for that choice and opportunity. So, as we all watch this pivotal moment in the U.S. unfold, I want to offer one honest response to the fear-based rhetoric that’s grown in Trump’s shadow: Fuck that noise.
Moving forward, I’ll keep striving to create stories that invite empathy, resilience, and understanding. I see it as a duty.
Fingers crossed.
